[Interview] Teddy's Interview with AM7 on Sept. 25, 2009: "I did not plagiarize anything"

Following the reports that YG Entertainment whose artists include G-Dragon and 2NE1 has received notification letters concerning infringement of copyrighted materials from a local copyright holder, Teddy (HongJoon Park), the composer and producer of 2NE1’s "I Don’t Care," had an exclusive phone interview with AM 7 on the 24th to express his position on the issue. Whenever there was a dispute over plagiarism, it was usually the label (who has the neighboring copyrights) who released statements to acknowledge or deny the accusation. This is the first time that the composer, the copyright holder, has spoken about his position.

In the interview, Teddy said firmly that he did not plagiarize, responding to the claims that there are similarities between the chorus parts of "I Don't Care" and "Just Go" from Lionel Richie’s album released last year. He said, "I did listen to the Lionel Richie song following the controversy over "I Don't Care." You can’t say it is plagiarism just because the feel, not the melody, of the two songs is similar.” He stressed, "Two people living on the opposite sides of the world could have similar facial features. It is not right to say it is plagiarism just because the feel of the songs is similar. "I feel frustrated that some people are convinced that I used the Richie song as a reference, if not plagiarized," he added.

Teddy is a member of the hip hop group 1TYM and has been with YG Entertainment for over 10 years, writing and/or arranging most of the hits by YGE artists. He arranged Se7en's "I Know" (2006) and Big Bang’s "Sunset Glow" (2008) and wrote and arranged TaeYang’s "Look Only at Me" (2008), Um JeongHwa’s "D.I.S.C.O." (2008), and 2NE1 and Big Bang’s Lollipop (2009).

He says, "When you write a song and if that song is similar to another song then it is the composer’s responsibility to make changes. However, as far as this song ("I Don't Care") is concerned, Heaven knows and I know that I have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of so I will not discuss it at length." He added, "I have absolutely no interest in either lawsuits or plagiarism accusations."

[NEWS] G-Dragon & Girls Generation = Plagiarism Remarks?

Included in GDragon’s new solo album, “Heartbraker,” is the song “The Leaders.” This song is known to many for the famous featuring of CL and Teddy.

However, looks like this song is the next up in the netizens’ debate for plagiarism.

Many of you hardcore GDragon fans may have already heard the song “The Leaders” many times. Those of you then must know the famous part where GDragon makes a reference to the Girls Generations song “Gee.” For those you haven’t the part goes something like “GGGG G baby baby GD GD baby baby.” Many netizens are making a fuss about how the lyrics and the rhythm is an exact copy of Girls Generations “Gee.”

Here the fight between the netizens:

Netizen #1 : GDragon is copying the lyrics and the rhythm to the Girls Generation’s song “Gee.” Also, before he had even been spotted for plagiarizing other songs too (Heartbreaker).
Netizen #2 : Why would GDragon be copying a popular song like “Gee?” GDragon is dissing Girls Generation during that part of the song by using a similar “Gee” rhythm to show off his confidence.
Netizen #3 : GDragon is just making a reference to “Gee” so its not a big deal.
Many netizens are keeping the thoughts that GDragon had been accused of plagiarism before that leads them to think that perhaps GDragon would have copied Girls Generation.

BP_824: "i think its really stupid netizens are saying this again... it just so happens kwon jiyoung's stage name starts with the letter "G" ... i dont think teddy and the guys plagiarized at all... netizens just dont have a life... every freakin song that gets released gets a note from netizens that its plagiarizing some song somewhere! grrr.... this should stop THIS SHOULD STOP NOW!!!

[news] YG Family Shows Love for G-Dragon

G-Dragon finally had his solo stage debut today on Inkigayo and the boy did not disappoint. Reportedly, some members of the YG family came out for support including Teddy, Danny, and fellow Big Bang Taeyang. Even Uhm Jung Hwa showed her support with hopes that GD will be able to enjoy this opportunity for him to shine.

As for the stage itself, he pulled off his outfits pretty well (but are those aren’t apples on his pants, they’re tomatoes!). I liked his stage props (that apple at the beginning was schweet!) and the way his hair glows with the lighting on stage. I’m diggin’ his hair a lot! G-Dragon pre-recorded his performance of the songs “Heartbreaker” and “Breathe” in front of a crowd of 500 fans (about 1000 waited for him outside the SBS studio to show their support). These two aren’t exactly my favorite songs from the album (I’ll have to cross my fingers for him to bring out “The Leaders” next) but he performed them well, especially “Breathe”. He looked like he had a lot of fun with it.

[news] Teddy Park Interview: "I’m happier now than I was back when I was an idol"

“He has changed from an idol group member 11 years ago to now, a famous producer that the whole music industry has set their eyes on. However, the praises and expectations of the people around him are still awkward. It’s because he thinks that he still has a lot of things left to do, and he himself is just a person that likes music. Also, instead of him coming forth himself, it comes more naturally to him to be behind people that have bright futures. This is the story of 1TYM’s Teddy (31, Park Hong Joon).

Teddy is receiving the attention of the music industry once more with the rising popularity of YG Entertainment’s new girl group 2NE1. This is because Teddy composed both 2NE1’s official debut song ‘Fire,’ and ‘I Don’t Care,’ which is sweeping various music charts lately. Teddy was also in charge of producing 2NE1’s first minialbum, which included ‘I Don’t Care,’ as a whole. His talent is to the point that Yang Hyun Seok, the real head of YG Entertainment, judged him saying, “Teddy played a major role for 2NE1 to be able to rise to the top in a small amount of time.”

In truth, Teddy was a talented composer and producer that the music industry acknowledged even before 2NE1. Last year, he produced Big Bang’s Taeyang’s first solo album which contained “Look Only At Me,” and he also composed Uhm Jung Hwa’s “Disco.”

Thus, debuting in 4-member idol group 1TYM in 1998 and receiving fans’ love, now after more than 10 years has passed, he is showing his capabilities with no remorse.

“You can’t be as happy as standing on the stage when promoting as a 1TYM rapper. It’s because I was able to let my fans hear the music that I liked. But, I’m also very happy now, promoting as a producer. It’s because I can work with the music I made and talented singers, and at the same time, I can let fans hear that music again. Rather, I think I’m happier now than I was back when I was an idol. Also, I think that instead of standing in the front, my personality goes better with holding up someone from behind. Haha.”

Teddy, who lives deeply engrossed in music like this, has a rule that he keeps without fail when he gives a song. The rule is that in order to give a song to a singer, he needs to know a lot of things about that singer personally.

“I think that the music producer plays the part of setting a middle ground between what the composer was aiming for and the singer’s intention. There were a lot of times when I was offered a large amount of money to compose and produce, but I turned the offer down because I didn’t know that singer perfectly. I think that’s why until now, I’ve only worked with YG artists.”

After Teddy first knows a lot about that artist, he then tries his hardest to make music for that singer or team that fits them. Of course, he focuses on giving life to both the recent trends and the personality of the artist when making music or an album. There are lots of times when he thinks of both the outfits and choreography here. This is a good thing that only happens when he works with artists that he knows well, Teddy explains.

Currently, Teddy is producing both 2NE1’s first full-length album, and Taeyang’s second solo album, which are set to be released later this year, at the same time. It could be seen as difficult but there are almost no times when he has a frown on his face. It’s because his expectations for 2NE1 and Taeyang are large.

Teddy said, smiling, “2NE1, who I’ve watched until now, are friends that have a lot of things to show in the future. That I met these friends is fortunate for me as a producer.”

About Taeyang as well, he complimented, “Since Taeyang trained at YG Entertainment ever since elementary school, he’s a dongsaeng that I’ve watched since he was very little. Even though he’s 10 years younger than me, I can learn a lot from him in various areas such as music. Currently, I’ve finished about 8 songs to go into his new solo album, and you can see a Taeyang that has risen to the greatest levels in vocal and performance areas.”

Teddy, who is full of expectations himself, is receiving the concentrated attention of the music industry in the music that he is going to reveal with stars and people with bright futures.”
