[News]FUNFARE Interview with Kim Bum

by Ricardo F. Lo
Funfare managed to do an exclusive one-on-one with Kim Bum, 20 (born on July 7, 1989, a Cancerian). Don’t ask me how. Kim Bum doesn’t speak English. Here are excerpts of his translated answers (in Korean, but of course!):

What does your name Kim Bum mean?
“No specific meaning.”

How come majority of Koreans are surnamed Kim?
“Well, good point! But I don’t know about specific historical background of it.”

What kind of family do you come from, conservative or liberal?
“It depends. My mother is more liberal and supportive, though.”

What can you say about your role in Boys Over Flowers?
“Yi-Jeong is apparently a playboy. I’m not like him.”

What about your role in Dream (also forthcoming on ABS-CBN)?
“Lee Kang-Seok, my character in Dream, is a pickpocket from an orphanage. When he meets this guy Nam Je-Il, he becomes a boxing champion. What they have in common is that they seem to be tough and bad but they are actually soft-hearted.”

Do you know that you have many fans in the Philippines, that Koreanovelas are popular in the Philippines?
“I heard the news about the airing of Boys Over Flowers in the Philippines, but had no idea about the fans and all. I’m just fascinated and grateful for the love and support. Thank you for all the support.”

What can you say about Maja Salvador, your partner in the RC Cola commercial?
“It’s actually my first time to work with a foreign actress. She was more than kind and considerate when it came to the shooting, my first time to do so in the Philippines. She has a good personality that soothes everything.”

How was the shoot?
“RC Cola and the production team were over the top. They were well-prepared and organized. They even prepared Korean food for lunch and dinner! Everybody, from the directors to the last junior assistant directors, was amazingly professional. Working with a great team like that ignited my passion for acting. I was told that some of the directors used to work in the USA, and that the team included half-German/half-Filipinos, Japanese and Korean. Truly an international group of people with different perspectives and experiences working together to make this RC Cola Commercial an inspiring one as the product tries to strengthen the image of RC Cola as ‘RC ng Bayan.’ Thank you so much for making me a part of this great team! I’m just overwhelmed and excited.”

What kind of girls do you like?
“I think Filipinas are beautiful. I like them.”

Do you have a girlfriend?
“No girlfriend at the moment.”

Have you always wanted to be an actor since you were a kid?
“I became an actor by accident, actually. Now I get to think that everything happens for a reason, and what made me decide to become an actor was more of the course of nature. Okay, so the story goes like this. I happened to be at a Movie Awards night in Korea, and I was moved by actors celebrating their colleagues’ works with full support and true heart. I thought that after all, the world doesn’t have to be competitive at all. I wanted to be part of it.”

Do you read and answer your fan mail? An average of how many letters/e-mail do you get per day?
“Thanks for asking this question so that I can at least share how grateful I am to all my fans out there. I don’t get to track down the average number of fan letters/mail, but I hope you all know that it inspires me so much to make me go on as an actor. While I’m on the set, I don’t even get to check my e-mail and don’t get to write back as well. However, I’m doing my best to show a better Kim Bum on TV. I hope the fans will understand me.”

What do you do in your free time; how do you enjoy or pamper yourself?
“I’m a movie buff. Most of the time, when I’m free I go to movies or watch DVD at least. I am really a boy-next-door. I play games at home and, when the urge hits me to be outdoor, I play soccer.”

After shooting a commercial here, would you like to do a TV series or a movie in the Philippines?
“Why not? It will be a great experience. However, as of the moment, I would like to take and enjoy each opportunity one at a time so I’ll be able to give my best shot.”

[News]Kim Bum compares Maja Salvador's beauty to Catherine Zeta-Jones

Kim Bum compares Maja Salvador's beauty to Catherine Zeta-Jones
by Jocelyn Dimaculangan, PEP News

Boys Over Flowers star Kim Bum was asked to pick a flower that would describe the beauty of Maja Salvador. After thinking about it, he answered, "Way too beautiful just to describe it as a flower. [She is] beyond the beauty of a flower."

Fans of Kim Bum rejoiced when they learned that the Korean actor has come to the Philippines. He arrived last Wednesday, September 30, and his flight back to Korea is scheduled for today, October 4. The actor became popular for his character named Yi Jeong in Boys Over Flowers, which was recently aired on ABS-CBN.

Kim arrived to shoot a TV commercial with Kapamilya actress Maja Salvador, who will celebrate her birthday on October 5. The two stars of the RC Cola ad met with the press yesterday, October 3, at the ELJ Building in Quezon City.

According to insiders, the 20-year-old actor was very impressed with his fellow endorser and even compared her to Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta-Jones. In the presscon, Kim confirmed this through his interpreter.

"Yes, that is what I said. I even told her, you look like Catherine Zeta-Jones. That is what he thought from the very beginning and aside from that, she has a lot more charm in her and beauty."

During the presscon, the Boys Over Flowers star was asked to pick a flower that would describe the beauty of the Filipina actress. After thinking it over, he answered, "Way too beautiful just to describe it as a flower. [She is] beyond the beauty of a flower."

Through the female interpreter, he then narrated some details about their taping for the commercial. "It was a really hectic and tight schedule and her [Maja's] call time was at 5 a.m. She stayed there for about 24 hours and she never frowned... she keeps smiling and keep everyone so happy. She was so energized. I love this girl!"

GUWAPO AND MAGANDA.

Maja recalled how Kim lifted up her spirits when they were shooting scenes in the wee hours of the morning. "Nakakatuwa siya kasi lagi siyang nagtatanong sa akin, nung last day ng shoot namin, tinanong niya ako, 'Are you tired?' Sabi ko, 'Yes,' kasi nga 5 a.m. pa yung call time ko. Sabi niya, 'But you're still maganda.'"

Then the Kapamilya star turned to Kim and asked him directly, "Am I maganda?"

"Always maganda," said Kim with a smile.

Maja then returned the compliment by saying, "Siyempre, guwapo. You know what's guwapo, right?"

The Boys Over Flowers actor smiled broadly and bowed before saying, "Salamat."

What does Maja like about her fellow endorser? "Sobrang like ko kapag nag-i-smile siya. One smile please." To this request, Kim gamely obliged.

Is he open to working again with Maja in the future?

"He'll be very honored if he gets that opportunity," said the female interpreter. "And he'll be very excited coz he had a great, blessed time while doing the shooting. Although it's not only work; he's willing to come back and experience more of the Philippines."

Before ending the interview, Kim said that he would love to know more about Filipinos and the Philippines. In fact, his translator pointed out, "He's really in love with the Philippines. He just arrived here and he was stuck in a hotel and more than 12 hours of shooting [for the TVC]. But he was touched by the people. In no time, he will be coming back whether for work or for a personal visit, I will definitely be coming back."

He also entertained the press with the Tagalog words that he learned during his stay here. Kim enumerated, "Payong, salamat po, palakpak [motions clapping hands]."

Kim mentioned that he is single right now. What are the qualities that he is looking for in a girl? "They should share a lot in common but he sees more of the soul."

MESSAGE TO ONDOY VICTIMS.

Before Kim arrived in the country last Wednesday, did he hear about the destruction brought about by typhoon Ondoy (international codename: Ketsana)? Did he have fears for his safety?

"He has heard about what has happened to the Philippines, the typhoon Ondoy. But people have welcomed him so much and he's so grateful for that. Before he fears of the typhoon for himself, he first considered how to carry himself. But still, people are welcoming him with their whole hearts so he's relieved. He feels so sorry for the victims."

What is his message to his fans who became victims of the typhoon?

"He says that he felt very sorry and he knew it was a very sensitive topic. Please do not lose hopes and dreams. As an actor, I'll do my role. I'll keep on doing what I'm doing to give them smiles and get them back on track. God bless them all. In no time, I would love to go back to the Philippines."

Fans of Kim Bum can see his taped interview on the October 5 episode of ABS-CBN's morning show Ruffa and Ai.

He will topbill the Asianovela Dream, which is about a rebellious teenager who acquires discipline when he trains to become a boxer/martial arts expert. It will be aired soon on ABS-CBN.

[News]Kim Bum's sports drama Dream will soon air on ABS-CBN

Kim Bum arrived in the country Wednesday morning (September 30) to become the latest endorser of RC Cola and shoot a commercial with Philippine's very own teen actress Maja Salvador.

Earlier today, October 3, the Korean actor, who is more popularly known as Yi Jeong in ABS-CBN's recently concluded Asianovela Boys Over Flowers, met with the local press to talk about his latest endorsement and his upcoming sports drama titled Dream.

The stars said that the theme of their ad is "proposal" but they refused to divulge more details.

Maja mentioned that they shot the TV commercial for two days in Binondo and Paco. In the behind-the-scenes video shown to the press, the Kapamilya actress was seen walking around the streets of Manila while holding a bottle of the softdrink brand.

Kim is able to understand questions posed to him in English but he would answer them in Korean so the organizers had a female translator interpret his answers.

There have also been rumors saying that Kim is in a relationship with their Boys over Flowers co-star Kim So Eun who plays the character Chu Ga-eul. However, the 20year-old actor dismissed this rumor by saying that he is single right now. The translator explained, "They were classmates. They used to go to school together so the lady is more of a friend rather than a girl [friend]."

The Korean actor mentioned that he had the last taping day for Dream before he boarded his flight for the Philippines. This marks the first time that he plays the lead role in a Korean television series.

When asked to describe his role in his new show, the translator gave this answer:

"His [character] used to be a pickpocketer [sic] in an orphanage and turning into a great person. He turns into a great person dreaming and hoping to be a great fighter...a great martial arts fighter. It's more of the process so it's telling people that anybody can be a hero if you really try."

The trailer of the show was shown to the press earlier and it showed how Kim trained hard to become a boxer.

In no time, he will be coming back whether for work of for a personal visit, I will definitely be coming back."

He also entertained the press with the Tagalog words that he learned during his stay here. Kim enumerated, "Payong, Salamat po, palakpak [motioning clapping hands]."

Did he also learn how to say ‘I love you'? Kim pointed to Maja and said, "She didn't teach me that."

Meanwhile, the commercial that he and Maja shot will be aired for the first time on October 18 right before ASAP ‘09.

Korean F4 member Kim Bum caused a stir with his fans when arrived earlier today in the country for a commercial shoot. But the Korean heartthrob has a bigger gift for the victims of typhoon Ondoy (internationally known as Ketsana). Reporting Marie Lozano...

One of the Korean F4 stars Kim Bum quietly slipped into the country but he did not escape the die hard fans of BOF who waited at Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

Fan: Kim Bum you're so handsome!

Kim Bum became the favorite of female fans because of his cute, boy-next-door looks. Kim Bum couldn't believe that the BOF craze has reached the Philippines. Even though he couldn't speak English, he extended his gratitude towards his fans.

He's in the country to shoot a commercial with Maja Salvador. He still feels shy about expressing his admiration for Maja.

This is his first visit to the country but before he arrived he saw the devastation caused by typhoon Ondoy on television. The brand that Kim Bum endorses has already extended help to Sagip Kapamilya (one of the charities helping in the relief operations) but he wanted to say a few words about the tragedy.

Aside from his new commercial, Kim Bum will be seen in a few Kapamilya shows and the Korean heartthrob hopes that he'll be able to spend time with his fans.

Translations: kdramabeans

In the first two episodes of SBS’s new Monday-Tuesday drama Dream, lead actor Kim Bum hasn’t yet begun training his way to mixed martial arts glory, but in these latest preview stills, we get a glimpse of some of his Rocky-esque moments as his Jang-seok character begins physical training.

So far in the drama we’ve seen his Jang-seok knock out amateur boxing champ Jung-chul with one blow. Sure, Jung-chul was drunk at the time, but given his winning streak of 125 consecutive victories, this feat grabs the attention of sports agent Joo Jin-mo. The next step has Jang-seok joining up with the agent to be trained into a fighter; hence this scene, wherein Jang-seok races up and down a beach dragging a tire. (END SPOILERS)

This beach scene was shot on the morning of July 30 in Incheon, After repeating his 100 meter dash approximately twenty times, Kim Bum waved his hand as he said, panting, “Even walking is difficult now.”

The scene in question airs on August 4 (in episode 4).

[Interview] Bonjuk Newest Calender Wallpaper and Interview.

Here are the newest wallpaper of August BonJuk advertisement.

Check in here for their interview.

The interview was taken on 23rd June 2009 (i know it’s months ago but if you have not check it out, here it is)

Worthy of the name, Kainozoic era star,(the new generation star),has been upgraded to” blue chip” for the advertising industry. Both Kim Bum and Kim So Eun are highly popular. However, in fact, both of them prefer to be a great actor/actress rather than a “star” with popularity. You can see that Kim bum has worries, but he is not nervous, has star qualities. Although you may not know him, you still can’t stop his luster.
Kim So Eun has a pair of beautiful eyes. She is such a clever actress who knows what she wants, no matter what, she will try her best to get into that.
These two people have fresh and sunny temperament and today, they meet at print ads.

Q:What are you doing after ‘Boys Over flowers’?

Kim Bum: I am busy at filming the CFs, my next project is ‘Bi Sang’. I am working on role analysis and preparation at the moment.
Kim So Eun: I also decided my next project which is a mini drama, will start to film recently. At the same time, I am filming a movie as well; don’t have time to have a rest.

Q:How has your lives changed after becoming so popular?

Kim Bum: I personally feel that in ‘Boys over flowers’, we were not actually acting, it was still just a ‘vase’ (for you non-Asian, it means people who are only good looking but no acting skills) However, I like So Yi Jung which has given me so much popularity, but I am also afraid of whether I can bear the bad comments or not. I am worried if I am acting as another role, people still have the illusion that I am So Yi Jung. So I am particularly concerned about my next project. (Kathy, the translat0r: hey man! Thats what I want to say, I always thought you were Yijung, oh gosh, Hav you guys seen the new pics of Kim Bum in dream??!!the hair style………………..)
Kim So Eun: First of all, I would like to thank you for supporting me. Because my supporters suddenly become so many, I know I need to work harder. Therefore, I will try my best to show the best side of me!

Q:What is the most interesting thing during working?

Kim Bum: When people are happy and touching through my acting, I will feel satisfied. Then I realized that I can give people hope and happiness through my acting, this is the most meaningful thing. (Kathy, the translator: what??? I think they were asking the most interesting thing, why did you answer the most meaningful thing??? Do they have the same meaning in Korean? Well, I don’t know, you guys find out yourselves. Lol…)
Kim So Eun: I found the most interesting thing was a lot of people looking at us on the set. I felt very stressful in the full view of people, but also, I am very happy. As an actress, if we can enjoy this kind of attention, I think that is a good thing.

Q:How do you get into a new role?

Kim Bum: I will work hard to get into a role, thinking of the environment about the role, try to make an assumption, such as” try to become that person.”
Kim So Eun: I will analysis the script many times. I am the kind of person who is based on the script and try to get closer to the role. I will also do some research and think about the role’s behavior.

Q:In that case, choose a role which is difficult to play but meaningful.

Kim Bum: Young Dong Chul in ‘east of Eden’. The historical background is in 1960s, Tan Goang village. It is a very sad role, he saw his father’s death which I haven’t got experience in this generation. It is very difficult to play such a role, I felt very stressful but at the same time, it is a very great drama. People all have good comments about the role. As an actor, it is very cheerful.
Kim So Eun: ‘Empress Chun Chu’ is very special to me. I stopped performing when I was in senior2. I had a big break to work on my study in Senior3 in order to get into university. During that break, I was studying, but I wanted to perform. After that, I know I have the passion to be an actress. Therefore, when I got into university, I had the chance to play young Huang Bo Soo in ‘Empress Chun Chu’. I think I learn how to act from the drama and enrich my acting skills.

Q:As a famous new star, it seems you are still afraid of something?

Kim Bum: Actors often change their roles. I am afraid that people cannot accept my new roles. I think that is the difference between what people like the style of a project.
Kim So Eun: I feel that happiness seems more than tiredness. No matter who, if you are doing something you like, you definitely have to pay for it. I am not afraid of being tired. I have strong desire to do things that I want.(Kathy, the translator: ummm.. I suppose she means she is eager to do her favourite things?) Everyone want to have their ideal lives which wont happen the same as your wishes, but you still have to live. And now I can do what I want, I feel happy and I am really a lucky girl.

Q:Is there any role you want to challenge or any actor you admired?

Kim Bum:I like Al Pasino,he seems have the ability to express the feelings of human beings perfectly. As a role who is the belial contacted with an capable lawyer in the movie , I am impressed by how he expressed the dual personality. I personally like villain very much, so i am thinking maybe I can play a role who has dual personality.
Kim So Eun: Ha Ji Won is my example, not only because she is good looking, but also she is confirmed by public with her great acting. I’m eager to be an actress who has the ability to play a diversificate role. My goal is to become an established actress like Naomi Watts in ‘The Painted Veil ‘, that role requests both good acting and the accumulation of life experience.

Q:Do u have any other hobbies apart from acting?

Kim Bum: I like sports, I was a member of a football team at school, and I learned kendo. (Kathy, the translator: I remember that Soeun learned Kendo as well when she was filming Empress Chun Chu. lol…What can I say then??lol….)And I like reading very much, also I enjoy playing games and watching movies.
Kim So Eun:I like reading as well. I think i am those persons who are reading regularly and I like writing diaries.
Dramas limit my imagination, books can help me extend my thought, so i like it very much. Also I like running(lol), horse riding, skating and any other exciting sports. Moreover, I like taking photos, i want to have an office with cafe if i have chance. I hope that if i reach my goal, i will start to learn design which i am interested since I was young.

Q: You two are attending Joongang University in the same Theater and Movie major, and had a lot of interactions in dramas and CFs. What do you think of one another?

Kim Bum: I’ve known Soeun for about a year, and whenever I see her at school or on the set, she is always bright, greeting others with a smile, which can give other people energy. Because of this, she was able to portray her charisma in her roles.
Kim So Eun: He is a really hard working friend. I am also the type who hates losing, and Bummie is very strict on himself and seems to tries his best and not rest. This is an image of a very fine actor. (Kathy, the translator: I think Soeun said beautiful actor?? But well, I agree with Heroine.Mei, I suppose she means great actor. This question belongs to Heroine.Mei, I wont be bothered to translate again.)

Q:As an actor/actress, what is your future plan?

Kim Bum: As the acting way is very long, I think it is just a start now. Like marathon, it has total length of 42.194km.I have run less than five kilometers. You can hear the cheering in many places, but you have to continue to run on your own. To use some power to adapt other competitors or supporters, and finally the most important thing is I myself never shake my will. Therefore, I don’t think I will be super happy because of the popularity. I think it is just a start and I have many roles which I haven’t played before. All the things should be the same as I first did it!
Kim So Eun: No matter actor/actress or stars are all good, I can say that I would like to have the way which is known as an actress. If I can be called as an actress, the popularity may not last very long, but that doesn’t matter. However, be famous of my acting, I prefer the added value which is accompanied by acting. I think I will use my original passion and feelings to perform and do my best.

Thanks to Kathy at Soeun-angels.com for the time to do the translation.
