[news] Iris’s strong start endangers Heading’s ending

MBC may be getting ready to let that axe fall for the third time this year. I’m reading conflicting reports about its soccer drama Heading to the Ground, but it’s not looking good.

KBS’s blockbuster drama IRIS has just premiered with a very strong rating in the 20% ballpark. The number was a whopping 24.5%.

That means that the poorly performing Heading, which has several weeks still left to go, is now essentially dead, with Iris and You’re Beautiful getting most of the attention.

One report says that Heading will end early and allow Hero, the Lee Junki vehicle, to begin a week earlier than planned, which would give MBC more to work with in the Wednesday-Thursday ratings battle. That would mean that the 20-episode Heading would need to wrap up by its 18th episode instead. However, Star News reports that MBC has “strongly denied” the curtailment rumors. In a phone interview on the 14th, the MBC source said, “Rumors of cutting it early are ridiculous” and that the drama would end as planned.

As you know, MBC cut Tamra the Island and Strike Love, but strongly denied rumors of cutting Friend, Our Legend, which went on to complete its original run. I’ll be keeping an eye out to see which side prevails.

Evisu must know the cold weather that’s coming our way because they got Jung Yunho to model for their new winter collection for 2009. He looks tough in these photos and the hair do is similar to his Purple Line days.

Looks like our winter won’t be too cold this year, right girls?

[news] Heading to the Ground will end Early on the 5th Next Month

MBC Drama Series “Heading To The Ground” will take its early ending bell on the 5th next month.

Initially “Heading To The Ground” is agreed to have 20 episodes broadcast time, however it will be cut to only 18 episodes instead.

MBC official on the 14th said “Due to the poor audience rating record, “Heading To The Ground” will be ended early on the 5th next month.” he added, “while as the consequence, Lee Junki’s drama “Heroes” will air a week early on the 11th.”

“Heading To The Ground” is not the first MBC drama whose episodes are cut due to the painful single digit rating.

Meanwhile “Heroes” will have Lee Jun Ki and Kim Min-jung as its main casts .

[news] Who Is the Next Solo Star?

Daum loves their polls, and here’s another one for you to dissect. A recent poll poses the question of which idol singers would receive the most success when (not if) their group breaks up. The top ten was determined from the consensus of about 12,000 people polled. Who came out on top?

1. Yunho – “Heading to the Ground” isn’t exactly a big hit, but netizens love their U-Know, you know (whose idea was that name?). Fans believe his acting skills will become positively Shakespearean with time. He’s also hot.

2. Micky Yoochun - Not the one from Dong Bang Shin Ki I would have picked for a solo singing career, but perhaps it’s the power of the pimp hand.

3. G-Dragon – Most overrated idol? Fans are calling him the next Seo Taiji. He already has a massive selling solo album under his belt, so it’s not difficult to imagine him going after bigger and better things in the future.

4. T.O.P – Well, no argument from my end. Handsome, and already has some acting experience under his belt. I definitely would like to see more of TOP the thespian in the future (Iris!).

5. Sunye – This one surprised me a bit- some are saying she may be the second Lee Hyori. JYP had intended for her to originally debut solo, but Sunye opted to join a group. Not disappointed that she beat out Sohee for this spot; whenever I see Sunye perform (especially solo) she does have a certain “something” that lends itself to her charisma and nice vocal skills. I could see this happening in the future.

6. Taeyeon – She’s got the vocal chops, therefore crowning her the rising ballad queen. Taeyeon also has a good reputation with the public, so out of the Soshis, she could be the most successful.

7. Yoona – Netizens think she may eventually be in league with actresses Jeon Ji Hyun and Kim Tae Hee. Really? Ok, well I can accept more as an actress than actress/singer, but she has received an unprecedented amount of attention considering her resume. She’s got plenty of time to prove herself, and I think she’ll be one of the first to break away for good in order to do so.

8. Siwon – Hot, folks love him

9. Kim Hyun Joong – He’s still riding a wave of momentum from “Boys Over Flowers,” but that poor boy needs to take a year long nap before he gets attached to any more projects.

10. Han Seungyeon – This one is the head-scratcher for me. Apparently netizens think she is cute and that she stands out the most in KARA. Hmm, I thought it was Nicole, but I personally don’t see anyone in KARA having a successful solo career, unless they also try acting.

Honorable mentions go to every other member of DBSK (seriously), Heechul and Kangin from Super Junior, Daesung, Jessica and Tiffany from So Nyeo Shi Dae and Sohee (dang it).

As with all polls, public opinion, grain of salt etc., but for the purposes of discussion, do you think this was fairly on the money? Who do you think will break out from the current idol crop to become the next Lee Hyori or Rain?

[News] Heading’s abrupt story changes prompt viewer complaints

Viewers are apparently unhappy with the recent events of MBC’s Heading to the Ground The drama is now halfway through, and despite the soccer theme, the story shifted abruptly in Episode 5 to center around a mental ward, after Bong-kun (Yunho) suffered an accident. He had been saving Hae-bin (Go Ara) from falling into the Han River, and ended up in the hospital with amnesia.

This week, he finally recovered his memory and escaped the hospital, where a fire had broken out. He risked himself to rescue a fellow patient who had been a support to him during his stay.

As a result, viewers are voicing their complaints about the drama’s choppy plotting and the lack of connection to the previous story. Some point out that the story of Bong-kun being locked up in the hospital dragged on too long (”The Bong-kun who dreams of soccer disappeared, and we got a Bong-kun who dreams of escaping a mental hospital… it’s so improbable”).

Another comment complained, “I thought we were getting a soccer drama but that wasn’t it, then I thought it was a romance drama but that wasn’t it, then it turned into a One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest or Papillon drama, but finally it turns out that it’s a fantasy drama where you hit the wall once and the hospital collapses.”

Of course there are some who defend the latest storyline, saying it was touching to see Bong-kun saving his fellow patient-captive and showing some maturity in overcoming adversity. Unfortunately for the drama, it’s still languishing in the bottom of the Wednesday-Thursday ratings; its last episode pulled in a 5.1% against Swallow the Sun’s 18.8% finale and My Fair Lady’s 14.1%. Perhaps they’ll do better since one of those is now over and SBS’s new drama You’re Beautiful kicks in next week.

[NEWS] Korean Entertainment Weekly Star: Jung Yunho! Head Towards the Goal

This week’s star is Dong Bang Shin Ki’s leader Jung Yunho, who had just debuted as an actor. “Heading to the Ground” that aired last 9th of September is a drama that he has put a lot of effort into; no matter if it’s a success or a failure, he has put in all his very best to complete it. No matter how low it started, as long as you live to the fullest, somehow it will be successful. This is what Yunho himself has experienced, and it’s also a message he wanted to deliver to everyone through Cha Bong Gun.

After his debut a few years back, Yunho has always been a singer, who has now finally stepped into the acting field. He admitted that his feeling is exactly the same as his name in the drama; “Cha Bong Gun,” passionate yet uneasy. “I’m a daring person. There isn’t a thing that I’m afraid of, so this is a good name.” As a singer, he already achieved status as the top Asian group in Asia with Dong Bang Shin Ki, and as a beginner in the acting field which he is not familiar with, he is humble and had to start from scratch. His hard work and passion for acting is admirable. He once had a conversation with the producer of his drama that lasted for 6 hours when he was away in Japan, and also on the filming location. All these had shown how much effort he had put into his debut drama.

In “Heading to the Ground,” Cha Bong Gun is a lively youth who is passionate about soccer, and keeps fighting hard towards his dream. This drama is filled with laughter and tears, and is a fantasy yet reality series. The strong willpower and fighting spirit are what Yunho wanted to express the most. His first taste in acting has brought him the excitement that he has never experienced before. Even if he reaches home late from filming, he’s still looking forward in going to the filming location the next day. Recently, Yunho had almost become Cha Bong Gun, and surprised himself whenever he ‘behaved’ like the character from the drama unknowingly.

To date, the most memorable scene to Yunho is the one where he had to jump right into the 5-meter deep river. That refreshing yet shocking emotion is what he remembers, since if not for the filming, he would never have had the chance to do something like that. Therefore, it can also be considered as a special experience he gained from being an actor. Life is full of challenges, similar to “Heading to the Ground.” “Through filming, I had learned the pain in growing up, just like getting taller. Therefore, wait until the last episode. I might have grown up with Cha Bong Gun!” “Heading to the Ground” is not only a series where he can share with his family and friends, but also a ‘documentary’ of Yunho’s growth.

Lately, Dong Bang Shin Ki is in the midst of a lawsuit, but Yunho stated that the relationship among members was not affected by it. All members have supported him in his acting debut with encouragement. “Changmin already called me ‘Actor Jung.’ Jaejoong has also jokingly asked me, ‘Show me your script ah~?’ (laugh)”

Jung Yunho is an undeniable youth. Ever since he stepped foot onto the entertainment industry, his life, his thoughts and everything about him, have unavoidably become public. He has lived his life under a spectacle, care from others, and at the same time, criticism from people. He is always curious about strangers and meeting them. “Living in this industry, seeing something new and meeting someone new are normal. Only when seeing someone who is not interested in Dong Bang Shin Ki can I become the real Jung Yunho.” He has never thought of himself as a shining superstar, and he has always kept his innocent and pure self. He wanted to do things a normal person could, not minding all the eyes around him. If given the chance, he always wished that he could spare the time to help out his friends tidy up their houses Only that way can he really feel that he is living, something that he can never feel normally. “Guess that’s the real me?”

To the members of Dong Bang Shin Ki, he is the reliable leader; to fans, he is an elder brother whom they can pour their hearts into; to others, he is still the young man from Gwangju. His feelings towards his hometown are deep. He would visit whenever he had a vacation, because that is where he started, and because it is the source of his strength. “Every single characteristic found in me is the result of Gwangju.” His responsible character started from his youth; whenever he failed, he would think that is all due to his weak points. Disliking halfheartedness and putting his best in everything is the only way to keep things in control, not messing up.

Yunho’s father is someone important, and he has influenced him in becoming a prosecutor. His father, who had always woken up at dawn for work, has not changed one bit, always giving the tired Yunho encouragement and support. From these, it can be said that Yunho will be someone who cares for his family. The rest will not be a problem, as long as he can be with someone he likes, and as long as he never expects much from her. As for his love for kids, this is something that everyone has known for a long time.

In the past, whenever he had the time, he would attempt to do all the things that he had planned for, which had slowly become a habit. Because there are so much things he wanted to do, he would normally get more tired than being at work. However, that’s something that he had to keep his mind on. For example, would he still have the energy needed for performing after his vacation. The actual purpose of his vacation is for the sake of his future work. From this, we can see that he has become much more responsible in terms of his work.

Once, he had the dream to become an upright prosecutor, but he had accidentally become an entertainer. He had commented that his character doesn’t really fit into the circle of entertainment. He personally prefers to gather with his friends outside this circle, than partying with other artists. Other than work, he has always fought hard to draw a line in between, in search of the real him.

The episode of “Heading to the Ground” that aired September 17th left many clutching on to the edge of their seats, featuring a thrilling motorcycle chase that was followed by a car crash.

[news] 'No Limit' Park Cheol-min, I wonder if I had U-Know's passion when I was his age

Volunteers to be U-Know's acting coach on set; U-Know's passion surprises him

"I can't help wondering if I was as passionate as U-Know when I was his age".

Accomplished veteran actor Park Cheol-min volunteered to be U-Know's acting coach while on set.

Park Cheol-min is CEO Hong Sangmin of a sports agency, a bit of an oddball with a talent for finding diamonds in the rough.

He partners up with Haebin (Ko Ah-ra) in order to get Cha Bonggun (U-Know) signed onto a professional team.

Park Cheol-min says regarding U-Know, "Honestly I didn't know he was a member of the group Dong Bang Shin Ki. [...] He made quite a first impression on me when he greeted me enthusiastically with a bright and energetic smile".

Park says the rookie actor U-Know stimulates him. He's always the first one to step up and try anything, and he gets along well with the crew, blending in naturally like a member instead of just an actor.

"It's U-Know's first time acting, but I see real potential in him. He's like a sponge and he doesn't miss a single word of advice from those more experienced. [...] He's so down-to-earth, I couldn't help wondering if he really was a huge star in Asia".

Park helps Jeong out with the small details of acting. When Park tells him what's awkward, U-Know writes it down and later records himself with his manager's camera. Then he checks his acting yet again.

Park Cheol-min showed real support for Jeong. "He has the foundation and real potential. [...] I'll keep helping him out and being a close friend without pressuring him too much".

[NEWS] Jung Yunho + Ara’s Mothers Make Lunch For 80 Staff Members Of HTTG

TVXQ’s Jung Yunho (U-Know Yunho) and Ara’s mothers made lunch for the staff of MBC’s ‘Heading to the Ground’.

Jung Yunho and Ara’s mothers, who always felt bad for the staff and cast members of ‘Heading to the Ground’ who would film all night long and skip meals because of time constraints due to a hectic schedule, packed lunches with care for the 80 or so staff and cast members.

When Ara’s mother heard that all the main characters of the drama were getting together on the 11th at Jeolla Province Gwanju’s Joseon University Hospital to film, she visited them during their lunch break.

Ara’s mother, who said she wanted to take care of, not only her daughter Ara, but also Jung Yunho, Lee Yunji, Lee Sangyoon and all the other cast members and staff because she considered them all her children, hand delivered lunch boxes she had ordered for everyone on location.

After that, on the 12th, Jung Yunho’s mother also visited on location with food that she had prepared herself such as yukhoe ( Korean beef Tartare), and dotorimuk (Acorn Jelly Salad) and brought everyone even closer than before with her warm kindness.

A crowd of high school girls flocked to the Joseon University Hospital to see the lead roles Jung Yunho, Ara, Lee Yunji, Lee Sangyoon and the rest of the cast members as well. Staff members worried that the high school girls, who had packed themselves around the hospital, might distract or disturb the actors while they were filming but as soon as filming started, the girls stayed very quiet and were not disorderly, thus allowing the filming to end safely and quickly.

[news] SM’s new drama… not looking so hot

With a 7.2% rating for its first episode that sunk even lower to 5.6% by its second, the drama vehicle that was supposed to be the DBSK’s leader Yunho’s big acting debut is not looking very promising. Amid criticism about its choppy editing, awkward acting, and a lack of general flow in the story line, “Manndang” seems like it is a drama series in trouble from the start. Both of its competitors for the wed/thurs time slot, “Lady Castle” and “Swallow the Sun”, are by no means big hits but have been putting up decent numbers with 14.6% and 17.8% respectively. In any case, the drama should at least keep its contingent of DBSK fans happy for a couple more months… and maybe that was the goal of this drama series in the first place.
